# Three theses defended in Applied Physics

Congratulations to three students from the Laboratory of Systems Biology who defended their bachelor's theses in Applied Physics on 8 June.

Janek Käsper defended *Modelling of mitochondrial processes*. Supervised by Marko Vendelin, Janek's work evaluated modelling software and used it to describe a biophysical model of the mitochondrial respiratory system and oxidative phosphorylation.

Maike Mona Širinov defended *Design and implementation of a system for single myofibril force measurements*. Supervised by Marko Vendelin and Martin Laasmaa, Maike Mona's work established a system for measuring force in single myofibrils, including microneedle force sensors that deflect during contraction.

Eliise Hendrikson defended *Estimation of the intracellular calcium concentration from fluorescence signal*. Supervised by Martin Laasmaa and Marko Vendelin, Eliise's work developed an impulse-response approach to estimate intracellular calcium concentration in cardiomyocytes from fluorescence signals.
